Why Root & Branch

What makes me different

There's no shortage of bookkeepers. Here's what sets working with me apart.

01

I actually care where the transactions go

Before I touch anything, I learn how you operate and what decisions you need to make. Then I rebuild your chart of accounts around those answers — not a generic template.

02

I explain what the numbers mean — every month

Every report comes with a plain-language narrative. Written clearly enough that your whole team or congregation can read it and understand it. Most bookkeepers don't do this.

03

You always know who you're working with

You work with me — not a rotating cast of junior staff. I know your books, your organization, and I show up the same way every month.

04

I've been where you are

I've run a business. I've led nonprofits. I serve as treasurer at my church. I understand the weight of what you're carrying — and I bring that to every client.

05

I help you give well, not just do well

Most bookkeepers stop at the numbers. I believe healthy organizations are generous organizations. I can help you build an intentional generosity strategy — connecting your business or church with nonprofits that align with your values, structuring your charitable giving, and making generosity part of how you operate. This is rare. Most consultants don't touch it. I love it.

“The goal is never just a balanced ledger. It’s an organization with strong enough roots to grow — and the clarity to know exactly where they’re headed.”
How I work

From messy to aligned — together

1

A free 60-minute Zoom call

Once you book, I'll send a short intake form. By the end of the call, we'll both know if it makes sense to work together.

2

Cleanup, overhaul, and a clean starting line

I assess what's there, rebuild your chart of accounts around how you actually run, and catch up any backlog. You'll get a “State of Your Books” summary when I'm done.

3

Monthly bookkeeping and clear reporting

Every month — reconciliations, categorization, and a plain-language report that tells you what happened and what to watch next.

4

Advisory and alignment — when you're ready

Budgets, KPIs, quarterly planning, coaching, generosity strategy. Once your foundation is solid, we build on it.

About
Steph, founder of Root and Branch Consulting

Branch out from a solid root, and the fruit will follow.

In John 15, Jesus says “I am the vine, you are the branches.” That’s not just a verse I know — it’s how I live. I see the same pattern in organizations everywhere: running hard, spinning their wheels, ending each year in the same place. Not for lack of effort. But because the roots were never set.

I co-owned a landscape company for 22 years. I founded two nonprofits. I serve as church treasurer. I know what it feels like to carry the weight of an organization — and I know what changes when clarity finally arrives.
